What if you could experience the sights, sounds, flavors, and traditions of Korea without leaving Houston? On June 13, the Spring Branch Management District, KACC Houston, and the Korean American Association Community Center of Houston (KAACCH) welcomed community leaders, business professionals, and cultural enthusiasts on an unforgettable Korean Cultural Tour through the heart of Spring Branch.
Our journey began at the KAACCH Community Center, where the rhythmic beats of traditional Korean drummers set an exciting tone for the day. Guests were also treated to a personalized keepsake as skilled calligraphers wrote their names in beautiful Korean script before everyone boarded a bus generously provided by the Harris County Precinct 4 Office of Commissioner Leslie Briones.
Before exploring the neighborhood, guests learned how Spring Branch became home to Houston's largest Korean community. The story began in the early 1970s when the area's first Korean-owned grocery store opened, encouraging Korean families, entrepreneurs, and small businesses to establish roots in the neighborhood. Over the decades, Long Point Road evolved into the vibrant Koreatown that exists today—a thriving cultural district filled with authentic restaurants, bakeries, markets, professional services, and community organizations that continue to preserve and share Korean heritage.
The first stop was the remarkable Ulsan Korean Art Pavilion in Haden Park (1600 Witte Rd., Houston, TX 77080). This magnificent 50-ton octagonal pavilion was crafted from timber shipped directly from South Korea and assembled by Korean artisans. A gift celebrating the sister-city relationship between Houston and Ulsan, the pavilion stands as a beautiful symbol of friendship, cultural exchange, and the lasting contributions of the Korean community to Houston.
Next, we stepped into Korea's rich traditions at the Korean Cultural Center (1809 Hollister St., Houston, TX 77080). Current Director Jong U Choe and former Director Mi Hwa Park brought history to life through a traditional Korean wedding ceremony, complete with a bride, groom, and members of the groom's family dressed in authentic attire. Guests also explored the Cultural Learning Center, home to fascinating artifacts, artwork, and exhibits that tell the story of Korea's heritage and its influence in Houston.
No cultural journey would be complete without food. Lunch at Seoul Garden delighted everyone with an authentic Korean feast featuring sizzling Korean BBQ, savory japchae, spicy tteokbokki, and an endless variety of flavorful banchan that showcased the warmth and hospitality of Korean dining.
To finish on a sweet note, the group visited Paris Baguette (1331 Gessner Rd., Houston, TX 77055), the internationally loved bakery that began in South Korea. Fresh pastries, delicate cakes, and handcrafted treats gave guests one last taste of Korea before the tour concluded.
